Much needed: Stan's 7 Day Pharmacy, in Rangiora, appeals to rural folk needing basic medical
supplies outside normal trading hours.
Stan Barnett, owner of Stan's 7 Day Pharmacy,
in Ashley St, Rangiora, has had an interesting
career as a pharmacist.
Born in Christchurch, he completed his
training at Otago University and worked in
hospitals and retail outlets in both New
Zealand and Australia, before travelling to
Papua New Guinea, where he and his family
remained for 13 years.
''I guess I went because I was yearning for
He got what he wanted!
''We were married on a Wednesday, and the
next week there we were in Mt Hagen in the
PNG Highlands. It was not unusual to look
across the counter and see a customer with a
bone through his nose, and wearing very brief
clothing made of grass!''
After their stint in PNG the family spent 21G2
years in Vanuatu (where Stan started and
continues to learn the French language),
before returning to Blenheim where Stan
owned two pharmacies.
Four years ago he moved to Sefton and has
a 4.5 hectare block there.
''We love the Waimakariri district, and found
the ideal house, so we are here to stay.''
Stan enjoyed the opportunity to create a
pharmacy using his own design, and the move
fitted in perfectly with the growth in
population in the area.
The community badly needed a seven-day
pharmacy, and this was an immediate
drawcard when it opened.
Stan tells of customers arriving from
Culverden who previously had to go to
Christchurch to obtain basic medical supplies.
Spacious and well-laid out, Stan's provides
passport photos, supplies a bulk vitamin
discount, and has an excellent giftware
section. There is a sports medicine section, a
play area for children to use while parents
browse, and space where you can read while
waiting for your prescription.
They sell mobility scooters on behalf, and
AA members get points for petrol discounts.
The staff -- all locals -- are often praised for
their friendly helpfulness, and having two
experienced locum pharmacists ensures a
professional service seven days.

There are a number of reasons for the
Firstly there is the ability to cover the entire
spectrum of real estate, and in particular rural
and lifestyle properties. This requires a great
deal of local knowledge and the ability to
understand trends in the local market. There
are now 13 locally based staff in the Rangiora
office, for example.
In addition, Property Brokers has an affirmed
commitment to the community it operates in.
Hamish McLeod certainly enjoyed playing
rugby in Ohoka, for example, but feels he is
now a little old for it! Property Brokers
sponsors the Mandeville Sports Club, Cancer
Society ''Relay for Life'', and initiated the
Salvation Army's ''Toot for Tucker'' venture,
which involves supplementing that
organisation's food banks for Christmas.
Thirdly the company has strengthened,
grown and evolved by anticipating and
responding to both changing client
requirements, and diversifying market trends.
There is a supreme commitment to the
communities of North Canterbury, assisting
them with all property-related matters.
Property management is another area of
professional skill. It takes knowledge and
experience to manage investment properties
well. Dale Quaife is a North Canterbury
